Renascer de Jacarepaguá
Formed out of a local street band, GRES Renascer de Jacarepagua, meaning the Rebirth of Jacarepagua, is one of the newest and fastest-growing of Rio de Janeiro’s Samba Schools. Located in the western district of Jacarepagua, the school’s name was chosen by its founders in order to reflect their prime objective of restoring and renewing the essence of Rio Carnival into the neighborhood through the creation of a samba school.
Since its inception in 1992, the school has consistently improved its standing within the competitive hierarchy of Rio de Janeiro’s Groups of Samba Schools, climbing to the Access Group within only three years (2005). After only six years of competing in the Sambadrome, in 2011 Renascer de Jacarepagua was crowned the Champions of the Access Group and was promoted to the Special Group for the performances of Rio Carnival 2012. The school is known for its fascinating story lines that lend themselves well to vibrant costumes and magnificent floats.
Service Projects: Renascer de Jacarepagua has only been around for a short period of time, but has made an active presence in improving the conditions of its community. Renascer de Jacarepagua is responsible for bringing in revenues and culture to its hometown as the school grows in size and prominence. Renascer de Jacarepagua provides much-needed jobs to many of its members. What’s more, the school’s samba nights provide a fun and entertaining venue that keeps the local adolescents off the streets and away from violence and drugs.
