Grande Rio

Grande Rio evolved out of a popular “bloco” (or street band), as is required by the Samba School Association, and became an officially recognized Samba School in 1988. Despite being one of the newest Samba Schools to compete in Rio Carnival, the school has managed to quickly rise to the top. With the support of its hometown Duque de Caxias, located on the outskirts of Rio, Grande Rio immediately emerged as a force to be reckoned with, placing second in the Access Group Samba Parade of Rio Carnival 1989. By 1990, the school was promoted to the Special Group, and has remained in that league each year since 1992, tying for first but ultimately losing the tiebreaker to its competitor. For the past decade, Grande Rio has been one of the highest scoring Samba Schools in the Special Group, and has the endorsement of many national celebrities.

Service Projects: The Grande Rio Samba School is an active supporter of its home community. The school founded the Children of Grande Rio, an association focusing on providing local children access to cultural and artistic activities (Rio Carnival Parades included), helping them learn and grow. In more recent years, the Children of Grande Rio has moved into the classroom, bringing the art and magic of Rio Carnival to the youth of Duque de Caxias.
